In-Year’ Admissions to Year 7-11

Academic Year 2026-2027

There are currently no places available in Year Groups 7-11

Please see information below regarding In-Year Assessments

Date of birth between Sept 2010 – Aug 2015

All candidates who have not gained a successful outcome from the entrance examination or have not sat the Urmston Grammar entrance examination when making the transition from Primary to Secondary will need to be assessed to establish whether they meet Urmston Grammar’s admission requirements.

Suitability is determined by either the sitting of a series of tests or through an assessment of existing academic materials.  It remains the right of Urmston Grammar to decide the route for each candidate. If the outcome is successful following this process their names can be included on the waiting list.

In the event of an assessment of existing academic materials being the route determined, then the parent/carer will be notified in advance of the specific items that are to be submitted.

In the event of sitting a series of tests being the route determined, then the  parent/carer will be notified in advance of the arrangements for the testing process.  No familiarisation material is available.

Designated times within the academic year will be allocated for In-Year Assessments.

There are currently no places at the school and places do not become available very often.  A successful outcome from the In-Year Assessment does not guarantee that a place will be offered.  In the event of a vacancy becoming available, the waiting list will be ranked in accordance with our published over-subscription criteria.

Parents have the right to appeal against all admission decisions.

All applications for In-Year Assessment must be made through the Trafford Council portal on the link below:

Once Urmston Grammar receives notification from Trafford Council, parents/carers will receive an acknowledgement from Urmston Grammar confirming information relating to the next relevant In-Year Assessment.

Please note:

  • Only one In-Year Assessment process may be undertaken in any 12-month period. Candidates who have previously undertaken an entrance examination or in-year assessment will therefore only be eligible for reassessment once this 12-month period has elapsed. Designated assessment times will be communicated by the school as appropriate.
  • An In-Year Assessment can only be undertaken for candidates who are resident in the UK. Applications should be made through the Trafford Council portal once the candidate has arrived in the UK and taken up residency.
  • Year 10: The Year 10 cohort is currently full. At this stage, it may not be possible to match a student's existing subject options and examination boards with those offered at Urmston Grammar. An In-Year transfer at this stage may therefore cause significant disruption to the student's academic progress.
  • Year 11: We generally do not admit students into Year 11, particularly once external examination courses have commenced. It may not be possible to match existing subject options and examination boards, and a transfer at this stage could result in significant disruption to the student's academic progress. Parents/carers seeking admission for Year 11 should also refer to the Urmston Grammar Sixth Form admissions pages for information regarding progression and entry to the Sixth Form.

Please do not reapply via the Trafford Council Portal once your child has already attended an In-Year Assessment for the relevant academic year as your application will not be processed.

Waiting List for Year 7–11

All candidates who do not succeed in gaining a place, having successfully met the school’s admission requirements, will be entitled to have their name entered on Urmston Grammar’s waiting list.

When a vacancy arises, the waiting list will be ranked in accordance with our published over-subscription criteria.

Appeal Process for Years 7–11

Parents of children who wish to enter the school after year 7 may be informed that there are no places. Under the terms of the 1998 Education Act parents have the right to appeal against this decision to an Independent Appeals Panel.

The decision of the Independent Appeals Panel will be final and binding on all parties.  Being granted an appeal hearing is no guarantee of a place being offered.

If you wish to exercise your right to appeal, please request an Appeal Form via email admissions@urmstongrammar.org.uk.

Only one appeal can be lodged each academic year.
