a week's celebration of science

British Science Week launches with our mind-blowing year 7 Science Fair and a drone-flying workshop!

It is British Science Week and this year, as ever, at UGS we are celebrating in style! One of the objectives of Science week is to ignite curiosity in STEM through engaging, hands-on learning experiences; we pride ourselves on this at all times, and this week is no exception.

And what better way to give our very own Science Week a sky-high launch than with our wonderful Year 7 Science Fair and a drone-flying workshop for our Year 11 students!

Science Fair

During lunchtime today, our Year 7 students were proud to display the culmination of their weeks of scientific research, design and planning.

This was a fantastic showcase of all their learning and hard work.

Year 7 explored and presented in many fields, encompassing all areas of science.

This included digital infographics, quizzes, fabulous display boards, and hands-on experiments, covering fields including neuroscience:

The solar system:

Cells and adaptations:

Cat adaptations!

The structure of the earth; muscular anatomy:

The dynamics of paper aeroplanes:

Windmills; memory; motors; animals in space; surface tension and cohesion; and humans and electricity:

Mice behaviour:

Camera obscura:

Ooblek and tinfoil; and last, but by no means least, volcanoes; and the explosive mint and fizzy drink volcano is pictured here before it was moved outside for its grand finale explosion!

Students from across the year groups, and staff, were keen to visit the Science Fair to both marvel at and learn from all that our year 7 scientists had worked so hard upon:

Really well done all, we could not be more proud!

Year 11 Drone-flying session

But that was not all ... just up the corridor in our conference room, a very special workshop was taking place, as Head of Physics Mr Murray shares: "The session provided a unique opportunity for students to explore the world of technology and aviation in a fun, hands-on way. We're proud to say that all the students showed excellent skill and control while flying the drones, making it a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. A big thank you to the students for their enthusiasm and good sportsmanship. We look forward to more drone flying on Thursday lunchtime. There are still a few places available, so get signed up quick!"

We are hugely excited about the special events that have been arranged for the rest of this week: more drone flying, dissection, the science scavenger hunt, the timer challenge, making a trebuchet, the flash bang show, and a natural dyes workshop.

With huge thanks to all in team Science who have coordinated and led today's fantastic events, watch this space for news on all the great things that are yet to take place!
