sparks fly at science club

A great way to spark learning at Science Club today!

After last week's seasonally pyrotechnically themed workshop on fire writing, this week Year 7 Science Club were treated to a very special hands-on session on the science of sparklers.

After a briefing and safety protocol instructions from Science Club leaders Mrs Walsh (pictured above) and Dr Bethell, it was time to get busy.

Firstly, our scientists were tasked with dipping splints into distilled water, and then wiping off excess droplets, before dipping the splints into iron filings.

Then it was time for the scientific magic to begin, as our students gazed on in wonder.

And it wasn't too long before the sparks began to fly before their very eyes!

The Year 7 scientists were ably supported not only by staff but, as ever, by our fantastic Year 8 Science ambassadors.

And as you can see, joyful enthusiasm was as palpable as the heat from the bunsen burner flames!

With huge thanks to Mrs Walsh and Dr Bethell for organising another epically inspiring workshop for our KS3 scientists, and we look forward to sharing more news next week!
