European day of languages
Aujourd'hui nous célébrons à l'école!
Head of Languages Mr Bridge is delighted today to lead the UGS celebrations of European Day of Languages.
Staff and students are encouraged to join in throughout the day by sharing their knowledge of a second (or more) language.
As Mr Bridge observes, statistics demonstrate that around 66 per cent of adults in the UK say that they did not fully appreciate the benefits of studying a foreign language when they were at school, so at UGS we're determined to support our students in appreciating and reaping the benefits of multi-linguacy from an early age!
Today, our staff are wearing badges displaying the words for hello or how are you in the languages that they speak in order to spark the curiosity of our students.
Form tutors also led short activities in greetings or numbers of languages that students may not be familiar with in order to promote to students how languages interact with their taught subjects, and to raise awareness of the foreign origins of, for example, some technical terms; or how knowledge of foreign languages and cultures can help in a whole plethora of subject areas or related future careers.
Languages being promoted today in school are also not exclusively European.
Tomorrow, there will be a special Assembly to celebrate, with staff and students again showcasing their second language skills, and we cannot wait!
Bravo à tous!
