year 12 electives enrichment programme continues

`Broadening horizons and boosting applications`: Wednesday afternoon electives are a core component of our Year 12 provision

The Year 12 Electives programme is an enrichment opportunity that is timetabled on a Wednesday afternoon, and it is an invaluable opportunity for Year 12 to extend and broaden their learning and professional experiences in a wide variety of academic, sporting, and cultural fields, and in the external working arena.

We have previously profiled just some of the available enrichment outlets - in Criminology, First Aid training, Journalism, Engineering, and Muay Thai Boxing - and this week we are delighted to hear more about the opportunity to participate in work experience.

Rima 12X recently took advantage of the opportunity to spend the Wednesday afternoon session working in a Trafford Primary school, and here tells us more about the invaluable experience:

Last term, I undertook my elective at a local Primary School. During this time, I did many things, such as helping Year 3 with their reading, and other year groups with library activities. It was a fun experience and I feel like it helped me to develop skills in working with children, and in patience and empathy. I had not previously considered teaching as a career, but during this work experience I realised how enjoyable it can be.

I am still considering my options, and even if I decide that I do not want to pursue a career in Education, I definitely think that this work experience helped me to develop strategies for working with children and young people, and for dealing with situations as they arise, and for understanding.

The thing I enjoyed the most about it was getting to know the children, and seeing how excited they looked when they were chosen to read with me. It makes you feel like you made a difference as you have helped them. And I personally think that it’s really important to read (I also volunteer in the UGS Library), so I’m really glad that I played a part in encouraging the children to keep reading.

I think that the Electives programme is an amazing way of expanding your horizon and of boosting your applications to Universities, Apprenticeships and employment opportunities.

Year 12 students are given the chance to rotate and try a couple of different, probably new activities that they might not have thought of taking up themselves.

You learn new skills and meet new people, which is really important.
