year 12 visit Sheffield university

Fantastic experience  of University life for Year 12

Yesterday, the Sixth Form Team organised a day's visit to the University of Sheffield for all Year 12 students, and it was a great opportunity for them to experience first-hand a range of subject lectures, and to hear from current undergraduates about the broad spectrum of University life, and to tour Sheffield's campus and facilities.

After enjoying an Introductory welcome and session in one of the many Lecture theatres, the students then split into two groups.

While one group toured the impressive campus, the other took the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session about the University, its courses, enrichment opportunities provided by its many societies, the city itself, and also about Higher education and undergraduate courses, and how the experience differs from Sixth form study and life.

Our sixth formers also met with University student ambassadors, who led tours, and answered the many, varied and excellent questions put forward by our Year 12s.

Our students also met up for lunch in Sheffield's impressive Student's Union building, which has been voted No. 1 in the UK.

Last but not least, the year group separated off to enjoy sample Lecture tasters in the following subjects:

  • Biosciences
  • Engineering
  • Law - students even got to participate in their own mock trial!
  • Sociology
  • History
  • Philosophy

As Head of Year 12 Mr Neale observes: "Overall, it was an excellent day, that delivered an opportunity to the year group to experience what life may look like post Urmston Grammar.

We will be sharing more information with students about Post-18 options over the next two terms."

With huge thanks to the University of Sheffield staff and students for welcoming Year 12 for this enriching day, to the Sixth Form Team for organising this great opportunity for them, and to the teaching staff who supported the trip.
