promoting girls football

Fantastic launch of our Girls' Football Friday takeover!
Following a hugely successful and popular trial in the summer term of a girls-only football session on the astroturf, organised by our Feminist Society, with the support of staff lead Mrs Bourne, our PE department, football enthusiast Mrs Derby, and sixth formers including Connie (pictured below):
Today saw the launch of a new weekly Friday extracurricular fixture on our calendar: Girls Only Football Practice and Games, and just some of the huge number of girls who were keen to join in (including many of our new Year 7s, which was lovely) are shown in our photos.
Feminist Society are passionate about creating a positive culture to help promote girls' football at UGS, and have organised for our astroturf to be closed off each Friday lunchtime to all but girls.
This gives our aspiring lionesses the opportunity to take part in the beautiful game and to hone and flex their skills while enjoying a fantastic community sporting experience.
Players of all abilities are most welcome, from beginners to those who already know their way around the pitch, and it was glorious to see girls from across the year groups turn out to take part, with the more experienced happy to coach the absolute beginners.
Our Sixth Form students are also being given the opportunity to get involved in coaching and running the sessions as an option on our Electives programme.
We could not be more proud of Feminist Society, of the girls who are participating, of the staff and Sixth formers who are giving their time to help make this happen, and of everyone in our whole school community, not least our boys, who are supporting this fantastic opportunity for our girls.
The Girls-Only Football sessions will run every Friday moving forward, and Feminist Society meets every Thursday lunchtime in our Conference room. They are very much looking forward to welcoming lots of new participants, and we cannot wait to share news about all that they achieve.
Well done girls!
