in memory of Judy loe (1947-2025)

A tribute to talented actor & alumna Judy Loe

It was with great sadness that we read the announcement of the passing of Judy Loe, a cherished alumna of Urmston Grammar School for Girls.

Judy attended the school from 1958 to 1964, where she left a lasting impression on all who knew her. A bright and talented student, she was appointed Head Girl in her final year: an honour that reflected her leadership, kindness, and integrity.

Judy's love for the arts shone through during her school years. She was an active member of the drama productions, notably performing in Hansel and Gretel in 1963, and we are delighted to be able to share contemporary reviews and cast notes of the production below:

Judy also performed in Twelfth Night while in 6th form, as you will see:

As well as taking a part in Badgers Green, a production at the then neighbouring boys' grammar school.

Academically gifted, Judy pursued A Levels including English Literature and Geography, before going on to study at the University of Birmingham, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Drama.

Fondly remembered by classmates and teachers alike, Judy appeared in several school photographs, including one from her second year (Year 8), pictured beside her form teacher, Mr. Hewitt:

Judy, of course, went on to star in the West End and in innumerable TV dramas, including Casualty and Inspector Morse, and we were greatly honoured when Judy returned to school to present certificates and prizes at the GCSE Awards Evening in 2007, giving us a wonderful opportunity to meet her and to hear about her experiences at school first-hand.

Judy's warmth, intelligence, and creativity will be remembered with deep affection by all who knew her. We are so incredibly proud that she was part of our school's history.
