year 13 biology residential

On Wednesday, our Year 13 students headed to North Yorkshire for their 3-day residential field trip, an integral part of the A2 programme of study for the AQA Advanced Biology specification.

It provides our students with an opportunity to develop knowledge of the practical application of field study techniques, and is therefore crucially important in supporting the delivery of the ‘Energy & Ecosystems’ content of their course.

Thursday was spent at the fantastic Cranedale centre in Malton. 

Here, they conducted investigative studies that started with trapping (and then releasing!) mammals,  including bank voles and wood mice, and moths and snails, in order to estimate the population.

In the afternoon, they headed to Filey Brigg.

Here, they spent the afternoon sampling the rocky shore and conducting risk assessments and data analysis.

On their last day today, the students began with fresh water sampling.

Followed by a visit to an intensive pig farm in the Yorkshire Wolds, where they calculated energy transfer values – that is the output created by the pigs from their input!
