supercurricular lecture

A brilliant evening delivered by our Head of Chemistry Mr Parker!
Tonight, the 18th in our series of supercurricular lectures took place, and this evening we delved into the realm of Chemistry courtesy of Head of Department Mr Parker.

"Deadly Doses: Poisons and their Uses in Media" was a fascinating and thought-provoking analysis and exploration of the field of toxicology from Mr Parker, whose specialist interest lies in analytical chemistry and forensic toxicology.

The lecture began by exploring:
- What is toxicology and why do poisons fascinate people?
- The categories of poison
- Ethics and responsibilities
- Why is toxicology so difficult?
Before progressing to an exploration of case studies of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and their respective deaths by poison, and the poisoning of James Bond in Ian Fleming's Casino Royale.

There were many opportunities for the audience to get involved and consider their responses to the questions posed about whether the depictions of poisonings were realistic and scientifically accurate, before Mr Parker delivered a thorough evaluation and insight.

The lecture concluded with invaluable recommendations for further reading, not least the work of Agatha Christie, and the opportunity to ask questions, and many in the audience were keen to find out more.
It was fantastic to see so many of our Year 7-13 students, parents and carers in attendance and so engaged; with huge thanks to Mr Parker and to our lecture series coordinator Mrs McNally for this fantastic and enlightening opportunity for our school community.
