A foaming reaction as our scientists explore the elephant's toothpaste experiment!

In the first Year 7 lunchtime Science Club of this new term it was time for the classic elephant's toothpaste experiment!

Led by Mr Murray, our young scientists got to witness the wonders of the reaction of combining hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), soap, food colouring, yeast and warm water.

When H2O2 mixes with yeast, it breaks down the water and oxygen; add dish soap into the mix and this traps the gas bubbles to form foam that explodes out of the test tube resembling large, elephantine-sized volumes of a certain colourful toothpaste, until the hydrogen peroxide and yeast run out, at which point bubbles then follow.

Our scientists learnt all about decomposition reactions, oxidative compounds, and the effects of varying concentrations of H2O2..

Lots of learning combined with lots of fun in another great week for Science Club!

Thanks as ever to Team Science for organising these wonderful opportunities for our students.
