pride, participation & empathy

Celebrating the finalists & winners of our LGBT+ History Month house writing competition
To celebrate LGBT+History Month, following our launch assembly, we invited students to research and produce a fact file on an inspirational figure from the LGBT+ community.
Our students impressed us with their insightful work on figures from a huge variety of fields spanning science, history, sport, and culture.
We were delighted today to invite the finalists to a special celebration where their work was displayed and where Deputy Head Mr Regan had the tough task of selecting the winners.
Huge congratulations to Nell 7T and Rory 8S for their outstanding profiles of champion swimmer Michael Gunning and astronaut and physicist Sally Ride respectively.
We are incredibly proud of everyone who took part, not only for their impressive research skills and creativity, but for fostering, promoting and embodying our core UGS values of mutual respect, acceptance and pride in identity. Their empathy and dedication shone through, and they are marvellous ambassadors for our school. Well done!
Year 12
Yesterday evening, we were delighted to welcome Year 12 parents and carers to Parents' Evening, which was incredibly well-attended as always, and lots of positive and productive conversations took place. And today Year 12 Mentoring Day took place, a fantastic opportunity for the cohort to meet with their mentors to discuss progress, achievements, and objectives.
Our Year 12 students who are contributing to the International Women's Day media campaign have also continued filming with Media Cubs UK, and we look forward to to sharing updates.
Looking forward to next week
The coming week will see a great many events taking place in school: a programme of events for National Careers Week, starting with Monday's Year 8 Be Inspired Event, which will see a host of visiting representatives deliver Careers Networking and Guess My Job workshops for the students; and author Monique Turner is visiting to present on her journey from school to becoming a published author, as well as delivering a Q&A on writing and her latest titles.
Throughout the week, there will be further careers and literacy activities as we also celebrate World Book Day, including the Year 7 Golden Ticket event, Book Swap, our special celebratory reading assembly, and a visit on Friday from author Daniel Dockery to meet with our Year 7 entrants to his creative writing competition and to award prizes.
On Thursday, we also look forward to our KS3 Interhouse Sports Day. We can't wait!
