inspirational visit

Today we were delighted to welcome back former student (and head boy!) Andy Mitten to inspire our students. Andy is a hugely successful author, broadcaster, legendary sports journalist and Talk of the Devils podcast host, not to mention founder of the fanzine United We Stand, that all started here at UGS.

Andy delivered an insightful and entertaining presentation and Q&A, firstly to our A level English Language and PE students and Perspectives magazine team.

And then to our younger students (and many fans amongst our members of staff!) during lunchbreak.

Andy presented on his pathway from UGS into a career in journalism and authorship, and shared a wealth of advice and guidance on breaking into the field, and the skills and qualities required for the profession, key to which are journalistic ethics, integrity, hard work, and versatility.

There were a great many insights into Andy's experiences, including securing the first-ever English language interview with a teenage Lionel Messi, and meetings with the legendary Maradona.

Our students impressed Andy with the breadth and depth of questions they asked, and they came away sharing that they had learnt and taken away a great deal from the experience,
