Year 9 students visit France & Belgium for World War One history trip
Yesterday in the early hours, a group of our Year 9 students and staff departed Urmston for our annual Battlefields History trip to enrich their learning about the history of World War One.

They arrived in Dover mid-afternoon after a good trip down to board the ferry to Calais (pictured above).

This morning, after a great night's rest, they were up bright and early in Albert for a 9am arrival at the fantastic Musee Somme.

Here they got the opportunity to learn more about the 1916 Battle of the Somme and the experiences of the soldiers who engaged in the offensive.

And to take part in a weapons and uniform demonstration.

This afternoon, they made an impactful visit to the Thiepval Memorial, the largest memorial to the servicemen who lost their lives in the Battles of the Somme.

Before proceeding to Lochnagar Crater, which was created by a large mine placed beneath the German front lines on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Year 9 will now make their way to Ypres in Belgium ahead of the final full day of their trip tomorrow when they will visit: Sanctuary Wood trenches and museum, Flanders Field and Passchendaele museums, Tyne Cot cemetery, and the Last Post ceremony at Menin Gate, and we look forward to sharing updates.
