house puzzle week success!

Fantastic level of participation from our whole school community

For the duration of last week, the House leaders organised a competitive Puzzle Week, and were blown away by the level of participation across the year groups, and by the standard of the entries!

They are thrilled that the daily events were such a success, and that the challenges were engaged in by so many students, who, while flexing their grey matter as they pitted their wits, were also successfully scoring points for their respective houses!

Pictured above are just two of the students who stood out for their super level of puzzling commitment: Year 7s Daban 7T (Bradfield), Poppy 7T (Mersey House), and Abigail 7M (Bradfield).

House Leader Mrs Chadwick here provides a breakdown of the daily puzzles and the champion puzzlers:

MONDAY: Word Wheel

By far the most popular puzzle!  All entrants correctly identified ‘masterful’ as the 9 letter word and will receive a house point. A bonus 2 house points goes to Siya 9R (122 words found!) and Daniel C 8U, a close second.

TUESDAY: Rectangles and Squares

A tricky one!  Here is the solution: (54) Solution: How Many Squares and Rectangles Can You Find? (popularmechanics.com). All entries receive a house point, and Poppy M 7T receives 2 bonus points for being the closest!

WEDNESDAY: Connecting Wall

Solutions are: turn, coat, head, run (can be preceded by ‘over’) six, clueless, frozen, wicked (musicals) killers, cure, who, clash (The… bands) crash, ding, beep, bang (onomatopoeia).

All correct answers receive a house point, and a bonus two goes to the quickest correct responses:  Mrs Daley and Class 11B German (Mel, Diego, Adam, Jan)

THURSDAY: Anagrams

Countries, final country: EQUATORIAL GUINEA. All correct entries receive a house-point

FRIDAY: Rhyming Answers

Friend who has fallen in wet soil - muddy buddy  A firearm shooting custard based deserts - trifle rifle  A superior knitted top - better sweater  Escaped water fowl - loose goose  Overly lively snake - hyper viper  Magical cow milker - dairy fairy  A married rodent - mouse spouse  Portly Christmas vegetable - stout sprout.

All correct answers receive a house point, and Euan R 10R receives two for the quickest correct answers.

AND FINALLY - an additional two points go to the Most Prolific Puzzlers, who submitted answers throughout the week:

Students: Dan C 8U, Euan R 10R, Daban 7T, and Annabel P 13G

Staff: Miss Marshall, Mr Sharp, Mrs Daley and Mrs Thomason

Really well done all, another great example of our whole school community and houses coming together and demonstrating our core UGS values of Pride, Participation and Empathy!
