year 7 plant trees in woodland trust project

`So lovely to spend time with students who care about the planet`: science teacher Mrs Motiwala returns to UGS to work with our Year 7s on an environmental project

It was fantastic today to welcome back our former (and now retired!) science teacher Mrs Motiwala, who is passionate about environmental issues and organised an amazing opportunity for our Year 7s to participate in: the Woodland Trust Tree Planting Project.

And as Mrs Motiwala shares in the quote above, she has been truly impressed by Year 7's enthusiasm for the project.

Pictured in the lead montage and below are just some of the Year 7s who were keen to volunteer to take part throughout the day in allocated sessions, and it is clear to see how much they thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

This initiative will hugely benefit the environment and positively impact climate change: Woodland Trust donate saplings and tree packs to schools and community groups who would like to take part, and we were so proud to see our Year 7s planting them with such joy and energy.

For some of the students it was their first experience of digging, planting and growing; but some are already keen horticulturalists: Luca enjoys helping his grandad on the allotment, Nadal assists with the gardening at home, and Kingsley (pictured below first L) proudly shares that he has recently grown 2 Venus flytraps!

As well as the benefit to the environment, the project is also hugely positively impactful to well-being and community; and by engaging together and developing a space where students and staff can enjoy and appreciate nature, our Year 7s are admirably contributing to the enrichment of our school community in the widest sense.

And they are yet again doing us proud by embodying the core UGS values of Pride, Participation and Empathy.

Really well done all!

And huge, huge thanks to Mrs Motiwala for arranging and supporting this marvellous opportunity for our Year 7s and for the benefit of all at UGS!

We have all really enjoyed seeing you again and hope to see you back soon!
