Congratulations to Liza Breykina and her Ribby Hall team mates who have been representing Great Britain in the Irini Cup 2019 international gymnastics competition, in Greece, and have come back cup winners!
Selection took place in December, and – as the best junior (Under 15) team in the country – the Ribby Hall group travelled to Chalkida in Greece; and, between the 8th and 10th May, they put in the performances of their lives to clinch the trophy for Britain with their Rhythmic Gymnastics routine.
Such a triumph does not come easily. Liza and her team mates train 3 hours a day, six days a week, and step that up further at times, with camps at Lilleshall National Sports Centre where they stay for four days, putting in eight hours of training each day they are there.
When asked if she became nervous ahead of competing at such big competitions, Liza said: “No, I’ve been competing since I was 5, so I’m used to it.” She’s actually more likely to be nervous during training, as mistakes typically happen during the early stages of rehearsing a routine. By the time they are ready to compete, all rough spots have been ironed out, and the thought of making an error does not even occur to her. Whilst appearing to take this in her stride, Liza is clearly proud of her team’s achievement, saying: “It has been an honour to represent the country.”
