Miss E G Lowe.1927-2020
Deputy Head of Urmston Grammar School for Girls from 1968. Acting Head after the retirement of Miss Jobling.
Former Staff and Students at Urmston Grammar School for Girls will have vivid memories of Miss Lowe who has died aged 93. She was a great character and memorable personality who was much loved and respected by many of her pupils. She was always smartly dressed and elegant. She had great style which she retained until the end of her long life. The image of her striding up the school hall in her black academic gown was immortalised by generations of sixth formers in their annual reviews.
She is remembered for her fairness and her firm discipline which was a byword. She was respected by the students who enjoyed her lively Latin and French classes and many of them kept in touch with her well into their adulthood.
Colleagues remembered working with her during lunch hours on the Guardian cryptic crossword, an occupation she continued well after her retirement. Latterly she studied Italian and was able to tackle crosswords in that language. She enjoyed travel and took regular holidays in Italy, Spain and Greece.
As she became less mobile, her greatest pleasure which lasted the rest of her life was lunching out with friends.
