Student Blog 10

And so it has come to this. One and a half years, many news stories covered, satirised and relegated to the bottom of the barrel but I suppose it is time to resign from the job of being Student Blogger and metaphorically hand over the flame of this sacred institution to young blood. But before we get swamped by sentiment, time for me to cast the limelight on the news before the metaphor gets overwritten and complicated.

My Final Hot Off the Press:

The apparent US equivalent of an orange in a suit, President Donald Trump, has been in conflict with the spectres that haunt Congress: the National Rifle Association (NRA).

The conflict started when an armed gunman stormed into a high school in Parkland, Florida and killed 17 people.

The shooting re-ignited the gun control debate that has plagued the US since at least the 18th century (probably).  Both sides of the political spectrum were in shock and the right and far-right decided to claim that the survivors, who decided to march on Washington D.C, were actually undercover F.B.I agents. I mean, if you were going to claim something, at least back it up with evidence.

President Trump announced plans to combat the school shootings that have plagued America by arming approximately 700,000 teachers with guns. This provoked an immediate backlash and so Trump decided to show how much of a man he was by saying that he would definitely confront a school shooter with a gun, in an apparent attempt to shame the officer outside the school who didn’t fire his gun for fear of shooting the schoolchildren.

This is what the world has come to ladies and gentlemen, a president who uses a tragedy to ‘enhance’ his ego. Despicable.

And we come to the section I have been putting off for a long time. Now is the time I sign off from being the Student Blogger, a job which I have enjoyed every second. I leave knowing that this will continue at least for once more.

So, I bestow the title of Student Blogger to Grace Poulianakis, in faith that she continues the legacy. Whatever that may be.
