Three more students from Urmston Grammar have made it on to England’s volleyball squads. Following open trials, Year 12 student Morgan Donaldson was selected for the England Junior (U19) Girls squad; also from Year 12, Ethan Lee-Akinya successfully made it into the England Junior (U19) Boys squad; and George Frith from Year 10 was selected for England Cadet (U17) Boys squad.
Urmston Grammar coaches, Howard Ainsworth and Iain Hines, can now boast a proud haul of Urmston students who, under their guidance, have made it into England colours. Currently, this is how the tally of Urmston students playing for England stands:
In addition, former students – Abi Littler (on sports scholarship at Derby Uni) studying PE, Jess Tasker (on sports scholarship at Nottingham Uni) studying Music, and Izzie Watson at Trafford College – have all made it on to the England squad.
Said newly-successful Morgan: “I have been playing volleyball for 6 years, so making it onto the England team is pretty cool. I haven’t had a straightforward volleyball journey, but my goal was to eventually make it onto England and this I have just recently achieved – and definitely not without the help of both coaches who have pushed me to make sure I do achieve it.”
Particularly pleased with himself is Ethan, as his previous attempts to be selected for England have not been successful. But it’s third time lucky for him. As Ethan says: “I was so pleased upon hearing that I had been selected for the National team! This was my last chance to trial because of my age and, having failed twice before, it felt really good to finally achieve the result I wanted and had worked so hard for. I am grateful for all the encouragement by the coaches at Urmston.”
George is also keen to thank his coaches, saying: “To be selected for England is my greatest achievement and has been a dream for me since starting the sport. I’m very appreciative how Mr. Ainsworth and Mr. Hines have helped me.”
