In-Year’ Admissions to Year 7-11

Academic Year 2020-2021

There are currently no places available in Year Groups 7-11

Please see below information regarding In-Year Assessments

Date of birth between Sept 2005 – Aug 2009

All candidates who have not gained a successful outcome from the entrance examination or have not sat the Urmston Grammar entrance examination when making the transition from Primary to Secondary will need to be assessed to establish whether or not they meet Urmston Grammar’s admission requirements.

Suitability is determined by either the sitting of a series of tests or through an assessment of existing academic materials.  It remains the right of Urmston Grammar to decide the route for each candidate. If the outcome is successful following this process their names can be included on the waiting list.

In the event of an assessment of existing academic materials being the route determined, then the parent/carer will be notified in advance of the specific items that are to be submitted.

One day each term-time will be allocated for an In-Year Assessment.  To be included for this assessment a name, date of birth and address for your child is required so our records can be updated accordingly.  Once a date is confirmed the relevant information will be posted to the home address. Please note – all ‘In-Year’ admission enquiries should be emailed to admissions@urmstongrammar.org.uk.

Places do not become available very often and a successful outcome does not guarantee that a place will be offered.  In the event of a vacancy becoming available, the eligible candidates on that particular year group’s waiting list will be contacted and offered the opportunity to undergo a further re-assessment; the place will be offered to the candidate who receives the highest outcome to the assessment process, multiple assessments being conducted.

Parents have the right to appeal against all admission decisions.

Please note An In-Year Assessment can only be conducted for candidates who are resident in the UK.  Once you have arrived in the UK and have taken up residency please complete the In-Year Assessment pro forma below for your daughter/son to be included for the relevant In-Year Assessment.

Please note – if you are seeking admission for a Year 11 place in September 2020 please be aware at this stage it may not be possible to match up options and examining boards, and this may have a detrimental effect for the student and may result in significant disruption to their academic progress.  Please visit our sixth form admission pages for any updates on entry to the Urmston Grammar Sixth Form.

Please note – We are currently full in the year 10 group and at this stage it is not be possible to match up options and examining boards as this may have a detrimental effect for the student.  In-Year transfers after the start of external examination courses may result in significant disruption to their academic progress.

Please note – The re-assessment for any candidate who has sat the entrance examination in the academic year commencing September 2019 – July 2020 will not be initiated until the Summer Term of 2021 as we are legally bound to assess only once in any 12-month period.

Please note – The re-assessment for any candidate who has sat the entrance examination in the academic year commencing September 2020 – July 2021 will not be initiated until the Summer Term of 2022 as we are legally bound to assess only once in any 12-month period.

Waiting List for Year 7 – 11

All candidates who do not succeed in gaining a place, having successfully met the school’s admission requirements, will be entitled to have their name entered on Urmston Grammar’s waiting list.

When a vacancy arises, parents of the eligible pupils will be contacted by Urmston Grammar; recently produced academic work, as specified, will be assessed by the Admissions Review Panel with the place being offered to the candidate with the highest outcome from the internal assessment.  NB If the vacancy arises in the first term of Year 7 then the over-subscription criteria will apply.

Pupil Premium will not be a consideration at this stage of the process.

Appeal Process for Years 7- 11

Parents of children, who wish to enter the school after year 7, may be informed that there are no places. Under the terms of the 1998 Education Act parents have the right to appeal against this decision to an Independent Appeals Panel.

The decision of the Appeals Panel will be final and binding on all parties.  Being granted an appeal hearing is no guarantee of a place being offered.

If you wish to exercise your right to appeal, please request an Appeal Form via email admissions@urmstongrammar.org.uk.

Only one appeal can be lodged each academic year.
