Employer Profiles – Emma Glicher

Name: Emma Glicher

Employer: Tangerine Comms

Job Title: Account Executive

What is the story of your career to date?

I’d had lots of jobs throughout university, working at everything from retail to TV and radio, however, after graduating with a degree in Politics, there really wasn’t a clear path for me to decide what to do next. I moved back home and decided to try out a few different jobs through work experience to learn, what I would and wouldn’t like. It just so happened that my first work experience placement was my last! After working at Tangerine for two weeks, I already felt at home and knew this was the industry for me.

What does a typical day look like for you?

The age old cliché “No two days are the same” could not be more true here. Typically, I’ll come in, check what’s happening online – what’s trending, what people are talking about and what’s happening in the news. Then I’ll answer any messages on a brands social media and make sure I know what tasks are urgent to complete for the day. Most days include a brainstorm or two to think of creative ideas for our clients and we’ll always be checking in with clients to make sure they know what’s going on and check they’re happy with everything. Towards the end of the month, I do a lot of evaluations, where I look at our social media content, ads and PR coverage, evaluate and also see what we can learn to make us better the next month. On the PR side, I’ll be calling journalists, and building relationships with them or letting them know about our clients news / selling them stories to try and get our clients in the press.

What skills do you think are important in your role?

Organization and people skills are vital. Being confident enough to pick up the phone and talk to a client or journalist will get you far.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to do your job?

Work experience is a GREAT route in. It’s sometimes hard to get across your passion and skills on a paper CV, so don’t be afraid to email/ call and ask if you can come in for a few days – you may end up staying like me!

Does your employer offer volunteering/apprenticeship opportunities?

Yes, we always have work experience placements available. You can check out the Juice Academy, based at Tangerine, which offers industry-led social media apprenticeships.

What is the best thing about your job?

The variety! It’s absolutely impossible to get bored in this industry as there’s so many different aspects of it. It’s constantly changing too, which means you’re always learning and never find yourself doing the same thing over and over again.
