A record number of top grades at Urmston Grammar

As 10:00 am approached, the main doors opened and students headed for the school gym. The mood of nervous anticipation amongst Year 11 students and their parents soon turned to elation as they cerebrated some outstanding GCSE results.

Mrs Wall,Headteacher, said, “This year has been unchartered waters for all schools, as the vast majority of subjects are now graded 9-1. The media has been full of news stories focusing on the increased difficulty of the new specifications and the removal of coursework; this has added to the pressure on students and staff. We are absolutely delighted that the hard work, time and effort that has been invested by so many students and their teachers has paid dividends; our students have demonstrated a conscientious and determined approach to their studies and we are incredibly proud of their achievements.”

Year 11 students reflected on their performance and expressed their feelings:

Elijah said, “I was anxious this morning, but I was secretly confident that I would achieve the grades I needed.” Hannah said, “Initially I didn’t know what to think; I didn’t want to be too negative, but was also scared to be too optimistic. Once I opened my results I was very relieved and I feel that my hard work over the past five years has definitely paid off.”

61.2% of all the grades awarded were 7, 8 and 9.

34.1% of all grades were awarded the top grades of 8 and 9; this is equivalent to A* and above and is a record high for the school.

Mrs Wall said, “I know that the students are appreciative of the support they have received from staff and their parents throughout their time at school, but especially as they approached the examination period.

It is a real credit to them that so many are in such a strong position to start the next phase of their education in the Sixth Form at our school and to continue to develop their impressive academic record. For those who have chosen alternative pathways, their education at Urmston Grammar will provide a solid foundation for future success.”

We want to offer our congratulations to all the Year 11 students at Urmston Grammar who have achieved such amazing results. Well done
