Student Blog – Oscars 2018

An introduction:

Hi my name is Grace and I am the new writer of the student blog. I have big shoes to fill and need to try and fill your expectations of humour. Now for my first post.

The Oscars 2018

This year Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Oscars for the second time in a row. After all the women opening up about sexual abuse you would have thought they would’ve got a more fitting host. But no, they got the guy who hosted the MAN show where he made fun of women, took advantage of their sexuality. Jimmy Kimmel was outshone in many occasions by the celebrity presenters along side him like Jennifer Lawrence & Jodie Foster and Emma Stone. Although, Kimmel got back on the favourites list by giving the actors something they all already had: a jet ski.

The celebrity presenters deserve a special mention. Emma Stone managed to gracefully shut down Kimmel’s diss like it was nobody’s business. Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph certainly upstaged Jimmy even in UGG slippers. Frances McDormand also took it upon herself to make a spectacular gesture by asking all the women to stand up and share that moment with her.

Another ‘highlight’ would have to be when Jimmy Kimmel, Mark Hamill, Margot Robbie and loads of other big names went to a local cinema and fired hotdogs at all of the audience. Free hotdogs with celebrities, who could ask for more? I’ll tell you who, the dozen vegetarians fearfully dodging meat coming from all directions.

Now for the political part: many celebrities use their speech time to speak about their opinion on topics like Donald Trump. Lupita Nyong’o and Kumail Nanjiani took time out to quickly talk about the ongoing immigration debate and the dreamers sitting in the audience.
A person we definitely missed was the Pricewaterhousecoopers guy who messed up last year’s Best Picture award. He was replaced with a small plastic stand, it’s amazing to think that La La Land wouldn’t have been humiliated if they had just bought a £1 stand to hold the envelope.

Another key moment was Denzel slyly checking his watch, times up is an important movement but it was also what many people were thinking as the Oscars entered hour number three.

An unexpected award would have to be Kobe Bryan, I didn’t realise he was nominated and still don’t understand what for.

The Oscars were near the end, completing the show without any mishaps when J Miles Dale has his speech interrupted by Jimmy Kimmel trying to give away a jet ski and the stage got very overcrowded.

The Oscars were a success, full of magic as expected. It is all those things I have listed that make this award show so great. I can’t wait until next year.
