School Direct – Personal Qualities

We are looking to recruit talented candidates who have the qualities and attributes suited to a career in teaching.

Experience of working in schools

We would normally expect all applicants to have some school experience prior to an interview. This could be visiting a school to observe lessons or working in a non-teaching assistant role. It is likely that applicants will be asked at interview about the experiences they have had in schools and colleges.

 

Requirements for Courses in Secondary Education

Biology

All applicants should have a strong academic record which includes:

  • at least a 2:2 honours degree in a biological science with at least half the content strongly related to Biology.
  • at least grade B in A level Biology (or a C if you can demonstrate evidence of sustained academic attainment from degree onwards) and at least one other Science or Maths subject at A-level.

All applicants must also have at GCSE grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics, or hold equivalent qualifications in these subjects.

Chemistry

All applicants should have a strong academic record which includes:

  • at least a 2:2 honours degree in a science related subject with at least half the content strongly related to Chemistry.
  • at least grade B in A level Chemistry (or a C if you can demonstrate evidence of sustained academic attainment from degree onwards) and at least one other Science or Maths subject at A-level.

All applicants must also have at GCSE grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics, or hold equivalent qualifications in these subjects.

Mathematics

All applicants should have a strong academic record which includes:

  • at least a 2:2 honours degree or above in Mathematics or a strongly mathematical subject such as Engineering, Physics or Computer Science.
  • at least grade B in A level Mathematics (or a C if you can demonstrate evidence of sustained academic attainment from degree onwards) and at least one other subject at A-level.

All applicants must also have at GCSE grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics, or hold equivalent qualifications in these subjects

If you have a strong A level in Mathematics but do not have a substantial amount (50% minimum) of mathematics in your degree you may be eligible for a subject knowledge enhancement course. A subject knowledge enhancement course is completed prior to embarking on the PGCE, and places are only available to those who have secured a conditional place on a PGCE course.

Modern Foreign Languages

All applicants should have a strong academic record which includes:

  • at least a 2:2 honours degree or above. If you are not a native speaker of the language you are proposing to teach (French, German or Spanish), approximately 50% or more of the degree content should have focused on the first language that you are offering to teach.

You should also normally have a second language (French, German or Spanish).  Your knowledge of this second language does not need to be advanced – beginners’ level will suffice.  You do not need to have studied this language at degree level.

All applicants must also have at GCSE grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics, or hold equivalent qualifications in these subjects.
