There are four pages of admissions information in this section. They are designed to help you understand the complexities that the Government Code of Practice requires us to operate within. They are:

Our Prospectus

Do not forget:

TRAFFORD LOCAL AUTHORITY :

You must also complete the TRAFFORD LA common admissions for which can be obtained from Trafford LA or completed on-line. Both Trafford alternatives are available by following details found in the link provided for you below:

Traff

Please do not confuse the two processes. Whilst they contain similar language because of the Admissions Code of Practice nomenclature, they are separate processes!

NON TRAFFORD LOCAL AUTHORITY

If you are not a Trafford resident you need to apply to your HOME LEA (e.g. Manchester, Cheshire, Salford etc) for the common admissions for as well as completing our "Admissions: Entrance examination" application form.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's).

Q1.What will the new entrance exam comprise of?

A. An English paper, a Maths paper and a non-verbal reasoning paper, (NVR). Examples of all three papers and model answers will be available from the school in the first week of July so that no-one may gain unfair advantage by early access.

Q2  When will the children sit the exam?

A. Saturday 26 th September 2009 regardless of Local Authority.

Q3. Will my child need to sit the 11+ as well as Urmston Grammar's entrance exam?

A. No, the Trafford 11 plus no longer exists. Each school has its own entrance exam in effect so apply to the school of your choice.

Q4. Do I need to fill in a Local Authority preference form?

A. Yes, you will need to fill in the preference form as in previous years.

Q5. When will I find out the result of the entrance exam?

A. Tuesday 13th October 2009.

Q6. Does passing the entrance exam mean that a place at UGS is automatic?

A. Not necessarily, Trafford will allocate on the basis of first preference. If UGS is not your first preference, you may not get a place. If UGS is NOT your preference it is highly unlikely you will get a place.

Q7. Will children from anywhere be able to sit the Urmston Grammar School entrance exam and will they be considered before local children?

A. Children can sit the exam irrespective of where they live as is the case with the 11+. The top scoring 20 candidates will be offered a place irrespective of address. We do however anticipate that most of these will be local Trafford children as found in the last round of tests. The remaining 108 places will be offered to those children who live in M41, M31 using distance i.e. closest to the school in a straight line.

Q8. What happens if my child fails the entrance exam?

A. As with the Trafford 11+ you will have the right to appeal.

Q9. Who do I appeal to?

A. You could choose to ask for a review by the school "Admissions Review Body" and/or you could request an independent appeal using the Independent Appeal Panel, contactable via the School.

Appeals process

Should you be unsuccessful in your application you are entitled to appeal to an independent appeal panel. The school however does most vigorously oppose all appeals particularly where our maximum admissions number is exceeded and appeals force class sizes in excess of 32 on the school. We regard the educational impact of larger class sizes on children to be quite unacceptable.

The appeal panel will check that the published admissions arrangements have been correctly applied; they would then consider the individual case brought by the parent.
